Everything you need to know
How strong do I need to be to start?
Know the rules and be playing games regularly. That is the only requirement, and from there I coach up to strong club level (2000+), juniors included from about age seven. If you learned the moves a few weeks ago, play a few dozen games first, then come back.
How long until my rating starts moving?
Most students see measurable improvement within 4 to 6 weeks. What decides the pace is the work between lessons, which is why every session ends with one specific task rather than a reading list.
Can I do lessons online?
Yes. Everything runs on Zoom or Google Meet with a Chess.com or Lichess board. Slots suit UK, European, US and Asian evenings.
Do you offer group lessons?
No. SilverNote is 1:1 only, so every lesson is built on your own games, your repertoire and your blind spots rather than a shared syllabus.
Are you DBS checked for safeguarding?
Yes. I hold a current enhanced DBS certificate and will send verification before your child's first session. Parents are welcome to observe any lesson.
Do you offer chess lessons for kids?
Yes. I coach juniors from around age seven through to strong club level. Lessons are 1:1 and tailored to your child's current rating and goals, with a written plan and regular progress updates for parents.
Are lessons available in London?
Yes. I am based in London and coach students here and worldwide, entirely online, so there is no commute and lesson times fit around school or work.
What actually happens in the free first session?
Your child's first lesson is completely free with no obligation. Send 1 to 3 of your child's recent games and we will work through the key mistakes costing them the most rating points, then outline a clear action plan. No pitch, you decide afterwards whether to book further lessons or a programme.
